Name Dropper – Chrome Extension
by Admin on 01/24/2010 · 6 Comments · Chrome Extension, ToolsEveryone and their dog is worried about privacy these days. There are over 3 million results for ‘Facebook privacy’. Every day you will hear something else about Google, Microsoft, Facebook, Big Company and how they aren’t doing enough for our privacy. Well, Facebook basically owns your life now, and Google can track you back to the first time you Googled yourself. Why is privacy important? Is it? You can decide, but what I am going to do is let you know when I visit your website.
Name Dropper lets other website owners who use Google Analytics know when YOU have been to their site. How does it do this? It executes a tracking event, so when the admin checks their event tracking, they will see a new category, Guest List, and the users’ info will be shown in labels.
“But wait,” you say, “I don’t want people knowing I’m visiting *dirty websites*, much less knowing my name!” Well Google already knows where you go, and Facebook knows who you are, and if we correlate that data, we know who you are, where you live, what TV shows you enjoy and what websites you go to. Personally, I don’t care to know any of that, but the people pushing ads to you love it–they eat it up. Now you say, “I don’t like that–I feel like they’re stalking me.” They are, and they’re not going to stop, they know you’re not going to stop using Google, and you’re not going to stop using Facebook.
This is like being a star, except you’re not important and you realize that, but it’s still fun leaving a calling card. Yes, I’m sure people will exploit it: Lady Gaga didn’t visit your crappy blog, and Elvis is dead, so he didn’t visit your fan site. But if you’re lucky, someone will visit your site, and wouldn’t it be nice to be able to introduce yourself to more than an IP?
Notes: A lot of the info on user tracking is over simplified and greatly generalized. Don’t panic, yet.
Yes, I don’t want people know that I visited their websites except I want them to know. But the tool may be nice for some other persons.

Thanks for sharing your views and opinions… it really is very helpful… well I guess that’s the price of using the internet. in front view, it’s a win-win situation. We benefit, at the same time they also does. But behind that, our privacy is at stake… were not a celebrity anyway, so, who cares?!
